There are various responsibilities and duties of a phlebotomist. Some of them are-

  • Verifying test requests by matching information with a nursing station record; producing differences to the attention of unit staff.
  • Checking patient information by reading their particulars.
  • Drawing blood specimens by using the process known as venipunctures and fingersticks.
  • Keeping the specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures.
  • Recording obtained specimens by initialing, dating, and noting the times of samples and maintain the daily records of collected samples.
  • Calming the patient before taking the sample. As there are many people who are afraid of needles.
  • Checking the glucose level by performing bedside glucose tests, after that record the results and then they report the results to the registered nurse or the manager.
  • Maintaining the safe, secure, and healthy work environment by supporting standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
  • Determining unusual test orders by communicating the nursing station, reference laboratory, physician, or pathologist.
  • Labelling the samples properly and transporting them to the required places.
